WEBINAR:  Andrea Gerlak and Tanya Heikkila on learning and environmental governance

On Monday, the 19th of August 2024, the PECS working group on collaborative governance and management hosted another webinar: Michael Schoon invited Andrea Gerlak and Tanya Heikkila to talk about ‘Learning for Environmental Governance:  Insights for a More Adaptive, Transformative Future.

Learning is critical for our capacity to govern the environment and adapt proactively to complex and emerging environmental issues. However, barriers can challenge our capacity for learning in environmental governance. This webinars draws from the researcher’s latest book, which synthesizes insights from extensive research on learning across diverse environmental governance settings – from local to international scales. The researchers highlight the social and structural features of governance that can help researchers and practitioners better understand, diagnose, and support learning and more adaptive responses to environmental problems.

Andrea K. Gerlak is a Professor in the School of Geography, Development and Environment and Director of the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy at the University of Arizona. She studies collaboration, community engagement, and equity. She is a Senior Research Fellow with the Earth System Governance Network.

Tanya Heikkila is a Professor in the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver, where she co-directs the Center for Policy and Democracy.
