What does the future of urban sustainability look like? This new book highlights the opportunities and challenges for our urbanizing planet.

Most people on Earth now live in urbanized environments. With this comes many challenges, but also opportunities. URBAN PLANET, Knowledge Toward Sustainable Cities, is the new open access book published by Cambridge Press aiming to explore how our cities should support our lives.

This ambitious book compiles the insights from a diverse group of contributors, including scientists, activists, designers, architects, journalists, and artists to discuss how urban spaces can be livable, sustainable and equitable. This inclusive approach extends to its publishing. The book is open access and can be downloaded for free here.

The book discusses both urban sustainable development at the global scale as well as experience from practitioners on the ground. There is a focus on how dynamic urban environments are and how they are constantly evolving. This is followed by discussions of how to instigate and manage transformations to guide cities toward sustainable futures.
