Reconciling timber management with multiple ecosystem services and stakeholders’ views in Durango, Mexico.

This project focuses on the Southern Durango region in Mexico. Historically, the capacity of forest ecosystems to produce multiple goods and services in Mexico has been overlooked in favor of timber production for economic profit alone. This approach has been suboptimal and fails to address the wishes and aspirations of all stakeholders living in very productive (but often over exploited) forest areas. The project will investigate ways to balance the management of these services (including timber production) in such a way that it benefits associated services and goods and at the same time incorporates the views and aspirations of various stakeholders.

Key features

The project will identify the changes necessary to transitioning into a social-ecological management of ecosystem services. It will also try to determine the desired direction for managing social-ecological systems that are best suited for the biophysical and societal particularities of this region. Finally it hopes to contribute to the identification of solutions that balance the needs of different stakeholders (landowners, government, and society) for different types of ecosystem services.
